Star mega Jamz Night of brilliance
Star mega Jamz Night of brilliance
The 11th edition of the anticipated annual Nigerian Breweries’ Star Mega Jamz 2010 was finally held in Lagos on the 18th of December at the Polo ground, Ikoyi. This year’s event got the most hype, all because one of the most respected superstars in the world of rhythm and blues would be making an appearance at the all-night event. What even made it more outstanding was the superbly low #500 gate fee to watch the performance of such a great international act. And your guess is as good as mine when I tell you that the Polo ground was filled to the brim and the show, up to standard.
How it all began
By 4pm, guests were already allowed into the venue as they dashed in with great hopes of seeing R. Kelly perform for what might be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The crowd who were entertained with good music from both the local and international scene from the steely wheels of D.J Humility, had to wait enthusiastically for another 3 hours for a show that was slated for 7pm. Just as promised, the show began right on time with the host Gbenga Adeyinka taking center-stage to do what he’s best known for.
The first act of the night was by renowned dancer cum artiste, Kaffi, and although she is relatively new to the music scene, she still gave it all her best as churned out two of her debut tracks to the audience. Next performances of the night came from the Jukebox and The Diamondz; two bands that where discovered from the Nigerian Breweries’ talent hunt show, Star Quest. The two bands that performed in succession showed the crowd that it was not just by fluke that they were crowned the Star Quest winner at different years with very appealing performances.
Next on stage was the duo, Kc Presh who got the crowd wild with a cracking performance. Kc Presh who was put to limelight as the winner of the inaugural edition of Star Quest also tried doing the same as they introduced a brand new act form their stable known as Wakonzy, who shared the stage with the duo
M.I had a little flop
It wasn’t all too rosy when the talented Nigerian rapper, Mr. Incredible or better still known as MI came on stage. While the audience had been expecting a superlative performance from the rapstar, he gave them something lesser. This was because he chose to perform songs from his new fast rising album, MI-2, rather than the popular tracks that the public were expecting. As much as the crowd wanted him to change his gear back to his more popular hit tracks, MI stuck to his new songs and this definitely didn’t please the crowd. Jesse Jags finally helped salvage his day when he came up to support his brother.
Just when the crowd were getting bored, Gbenga Adeyinka introduced R.Kelly on stage making the crowd go wild as they awaited their star but instead, the award winning R&B twins, P-square came suddenly on stage and it didn’t take long for the crowd to forget that they were waiting for R.Kelly as they got caught up in P-square’s fantasy ride with a most cracking performance I have seen of the duo in a while. Their hit tracks like Throway, Roll It and I Love You did the magic.
R. Kelly blew up the stage
What was the most anticipated performance of the night turned out to be worthy after all when the pied piper himself finally took center-stage at 12.38am. R.Kelly who was accompanied by his father as well as two of his cousins had earlier been housed in the green tent at the Polo ground as he waited to be called on stage. The massive crowd which had been waiting to welcome their hero caught R. Kelly by surprise with the thunderous reception he got from them. Finally he settled on stage to perform his hit tracks and to his amazement the crowd chorused his song with him. Although his performance didn’t exceed an hour because of his next show in Abuja, nevertheless, he was absolutely stunning and I was particularly captivated seeing one of my most respected superstars perform live on stage. The audience sang along to his musical rendition, which included hits such as ‘Happy People’, ‘Fiesta’, ‘Bump & Grind’ and ‘Snake’, among other musical hits. At intervals, the musical superstar would acknowledge the cheers from the crowd, revealing that he did not know he had such a huge fan base in Nigeria. On hand to support R.Kelly at the Old Parade Ground, Abuja venue were Nigerian superstars D’ Banj, MI, Timaya, Faze, Sound Sultan, among others. After what can be termed as a short-lived yet satisfying performance from the R&B star, he got all emotional while giving his parting lines to the well appreciated audience. He described Nigeria as a place where people are appreciated but not tolerated.
9ce wrapped it all for the night after R.Kelly had left the stage and he didn’t disappoint for a second when he took the mic. He gave the audience a very memorable performance without any doubt as he sang hit tracks form his archives.
Casualty Report Update
Contrary to the report that lives were lost during the shows that were held at Lagos and Abuja which both witnessed a very massive turn outs, it can be conclusively revealed that no mortality was recorded. This was released to the press by Nigerian Breweries’ corporate affairs adviser, Mr. Yusuf Ayeni who clarified that although 13 people may have sustained injuries due to the magnanimity of the crowd trying to gain entrance at the point of entry in Abuja, this was nevertheless taken care of instantly by the capable international critical rescue team who moved all the victims to a N
ational Hospital in Abuja and now hospital authorities have confirmed that the injuries have been treated and discharged.
He stated that “The concert, like the Lagos leg attracted a huge crowd which is normal for a concert featuring an A-list artiste like R Kelly. We thank those who have called in to confirm this report and urge the general public to discountenance this false reports .The concert as confirmed by many was a huge success. Nigerian Breweries Plc wishes to use this opportunity to thank all who attended the concerts both in Lagos and Abuja for their support and patronage over the years.”
