Lagos Shut Down Concert
On the 26th of December, all roads once again led to the prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites as people trooped from every part of Lagos to be part of the Lagos Shut Down Concert. It was no longer rumour that one of the finest rappers to emerge from U.S is once again performing live in Lagos. After a very successful MTV Africa Music Award night performance, William Leonard Roberts II, popularly known as Rick Ross came back with a bang. And this was an opportunity for his fans that missed out on the MAMAs to have their own fill even to a larger extent. This was not just any other concert but a concert of class as it witnessed the best of the best from variety of Nigerian artistes as well as King Ross himself.
At 6.00pm, it was already eminent that the show was going to witness a large turnout as some people began converging around the ticketing corner to purchase their ticket while other simply lurked around the lobby as they counted down seconds by seconds for the start of the show that was slated for 7.pm. But alas! The show didn’t begin until late around 11.00pm for reasons best known to the organizers. But finally, after the long wait, the night was worth every dime and time spent. The event witnessed a great turnout as the Expo Hall was reasonably filled to capacity. The event which was organized by Storm Records with collaboration from Kilimanjaro Entertainment and proudly supported by MTN, Beat 99.9 Fm and Eko Hotel and Suites
Bits and pieces as it went on
The stage beautifully glittered and D.J Neptune continued dropping nice joints from his wheels as the guests anxiously took their seats in the hall. At exactly five minutes after 11.00pm, Olisa, the host of the night came on stage clad in the simplest outfit. The first act of the night was SugarboyA1, though an upcoming artiste, he gave in his very best and the crowd applauded him after performing two of his tracks. The next performance was by the Ice Prince Zamani and even though he came all alone on stage, he still got the crowd jiggy with his Oleku hit single.
Another sensation of the night is 2010’s young revelation, Whiz kid. He was heavily supported with cheers from the audience who also joined in chorusing his songs while he performed. Storm Record artiste, YQ who was the next act on stage featured a tribute to the late Da Grin before finally settling down to give the audience the best from his debut album. One time project fame winner, Iyanya also showed his fans that he still got the groove with an amazing performance that had a lot of choreography going along with it.
Naeto C, Dr Sid and MI rocked the night
Dr Sid effectively represented Mo’hits with a mind blowing act that got everyone standing on their feet. Supported by K-Switch, he capitalized appropriately on his chart busting hit singles to woo the crowd to his side and the best the audience could do was dance along. M.I put aside his disappointment at the Star Mega Jamz to give a pulsating performance to a more enlightened crowd who sing and danced along with the B.E.T nominee.
Naeto Super C as he now tags himself gave out the hottest performance of the night from the Nigerian corner. Aside from the fact that he was the best dressed artiste of the night Naeto C was simply superb. I have not seen him danced so much in his entire career but this night was way different from what people were used to. Naeto C whose album will be launched in a couple of weeks dished out his popular tracks to the ears of the audience who moved rhythmically along with him while on their feet. D.J Neptune proved that he was not just an average D.J but an exceptional one as he gave Naeto the maximum support necessary. Sasha and General Pype, who are also signed on the Storm Records label, were also present to support him on stage.
King Ross was superb
After a brief stage set up, it was the turn of the Miami based rap king to come on stage. The guests all remained on their feet, awaiting the moment their idol will step on stage and when he finally stepped on stage, the reception he got was incredible and It seemed like he was coming to Lagos for the first time. The rapper with heavy beards was blazing in his simple white T-shirt on a blue denim jeans and a stunning gold chain to match.
In a country where rap songs are not much adored, I had my notion completely changed and I must admit that I had my mouth wide agape when his songs were chorused by the guests. He churned out about ten of his hit tracks and all were sung after him while people jumped up and down to the beats. This time the audience were not just on their feet but rather standing on their seats as each person struggled to catch a glimpse of the rapper while others simply went close to the stage to have a closer look or perhaps a touch form the superstar. The heavy rapper, supported by his crew, showed how fit he was as he performed for about two hours non-stop and when he finally ended the night, he got a most deserved applause that echoed round the hall.
