LIFE TRAVAILS
Help! Help!!..was all Akin could mutter in a tiring tone. There he was, stuck in the remains of his new Toyota Camry car. The more he struggled to come out of the damaged car, the more he felt physically incomplete. His right arm was terribly twisted around the steering in the wrong direction while his body was badly compressed by the car's roof to the driver's seat. By his side was the corpse of his girlfriend, Anita, who had a broken neck and whose ribs were protruding out of her chest in a bizarre state.
From a distance , he could hear vehicles speeding off to their various directions caring less whether an accident had occurred or not. He couldn't really blame them for not attempting to help as he knew that it was attributed to the deplorable state of the country's security. No one would dear stop at that unholy hour of the night. It was 2:14am and the accident had happened 3hours earlier. He knew that it was only by divine grace that he was still alive, hence he silently prayed for God's mercy. As blood was dripping from his injured body parts, dizziness gradually crept in. His mind flashed back to the incidents that led to the fatal accident as he blacked out.
It was exactly 8:48pm, when Akin arrived in the company of his beautiful girlfriend in his brand new Toyota Camry exquisite. He was dressed in his typical plain black T-shirt on a baggy blue three-quarter shorts while Anita was clad in a tight white pants and a strapless pink top that struggled to hold the fullness of her breast. As they made their way into the club, everyone stared at them in total admiration. There he was the latest big boy in town in company of his newfound beauty that clung close to him like an infant. Everyone in the club knew how rich he was as he had just been paid a whooping sum of 50 million naira for the state contact he recently executed. He was right on top of his game.
Once at the bar, he continuously ordered for drinks for him and all those that cared to sit close to him in celebration of his success. Even the barman was not left out of the show. Akin felt at the apex of the world as everyone repeatedly hailed him, tagging him as “chairman”. Green and brown bottles were continuously been ushered in and out by the barman while plates of pepper soup filled every nook and cranny of all the tables.
Some hours later, Akin and his girl struggled out of the club after having unknowingly overpaid his bills with an excess of 10,000 naira. They both held themselves close for support in the same manner they had walked into the club but this time, their feet were wobbly, nevertheless, they still managed to make their way to the car. Akin subsequently ignited the car, made a reverse and crazily sped off. His visions were blurry but he felt he had a sense of control on the automobile; hence he kept moving at very high speed deep into the night.
Once on the highway, his speed increased from 100km/hr to 160km/hr as he struggled with the wheels. He was still trying to gain control and unnoticeably passed a road sign, which stated “Dangerous corner ahead. Slow Down”, when he took a sharp bend at the hilly turn. The last thing he could recollect was that his car was lifted off the ground and had somersaulted in quick succession to the other lane that was under construction. An incoming truck, which was also moving at high speed, had collided headlong with the left side of his little car.
Akin woke up some days later in the hospital only to realize that his right arm had been amputated while his broken legs were wrapped in plaster of Paris.
My dear friends, drunk driving has caused a lot of deaths on our dilapidated roads. Drinking and driving is very dangerous to one’s existence. If you must drink, don’t drive and if you must drive, don’t drink or simply take non-alcoholic drinks.
This story is dedicated to those that had lost their lives due to road accidents. LETS LIVE SAFELY.
